Asian elephants bury their dead, study suggests
  + stars: | 2024-03-14 | by ( Jack Guy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
CNN —Researchers in India have for the first time documented how Asian elephants bury dead calves. While African elephants are known to bury dead calves, this is the first time that the behavior has been documented in Asian elephants, study author Akashdeep Roy, a researcher at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), told CNN on Wednesday. A dead calf being dragged by an adult. This is the first time that calf burials by Asian elephants have been documented. Roy contests this theory, explaining that contusions on the backs of the dead calves show that they were dragged to their resting place by other members of the herd.

Advertisement"You will learn from members of the NRA board that the NRA continues to honor the legacy of Wayne LaPierre," she told the jury, before repeating, "but the NRA is not Wayne LaPierre." New York Attorney General Letitia James sued the gun lobby, LaPierre, and three other longtime NRA leaders three years ago. Wayne LaPierre resigned as leader of the National Rifle Association on Friday, ending his decadeslong reign over the prominent gun rights group, days before the start of his civil trial in New York. "My passion for our cause burns as deeply as ever," LaPierre said in a statement. The attorney general claims LaPierre spent more than $500,000 of the NRA's assets to fly himself and his family members to the Bahamas. The civil trial in Manhattan is expected to begin Monday and will last for six weeks. The attorney general is seeking both remedies, which Cohen would decide on during a second phase of the trial.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia man was left reeling after receiving a $1.4 million speeding ticket, but city officials say the figure was just a placeholder, not the actual fine. Connor Cato tells WSAV-TV in Savannah that he received the citation after getting pulled over in September for driving 90 mph (145 kph) in a 55 mph (89 kph) zone. He called the court thinking the figure was a typo but says he was told he either had to pay it or appear in court in December. Savannah officials say anyone caught driving more than 35 mph (56 kph) above the speed limit has to appear in court, where a judge will determine the actual fine. He added that the court “is currently working on adjusting the placeholder language to avoid any confusion.”

In the latest challenge to the role race may play in school admissions, a legal activist group asked the Supreme Court on Monday to hear a case on how students are selected at one of the country’s top high schools, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. A divided three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit ruled in May that Thomas Jefferson, a public school in Alexandria, Va., did not discriminate in its admissions. The Pacific Legal Foundation, a libertarian law group, wants the Supreme Court to overturn that decision, arguing that the school’s new admissions policies disadvantaged Asian American applicants. At issue is the use of what the school board said were race-neutral criteria to achieve a diverse student body. “This is the next frontier,” Joshua P. Thompson, a lawyer with the Pacific Legal Foundation, has said of the litigation.

Archaeologists recently found straight lines of 25 pits dating to around 8,000 years ago. The Mesolithic pits contain animal bones, including those of an extinct species of cattle. The pits are arranged in straight lines, and a few contain animal bones with marks suggesting people ate them. The arrangement of the pits appears intentional, dug in several straight lines covering an area of up to about 1,600 feet. The researchers at MOLA plan to investigate whether the Bedfordshire pits' arrangement coincides with the solstice or other celestial events.

Carrier Global 's long-term potential is currently overshadowed by a catalyst-free near term, Morgan Stanley warned. Analyst Joshua Pokrzywinski downgraded the HVAC stock to equal weight from overweight and cut his price target by $2. "But view the lack of near-term catalysts and relative resilience vs. other HVAC names as an opportunity to focus elsewhere for the next few quarters." Pokrzywinski said recent portfolio announcements put the company on track for "significant growth acceleration and rerating potential" in the next one to two years. Still, he said a pure-play HVAC business could rerate as high as Trane levels, which would mean an upside of 18% to Carrier's valuation.
